The Work and Procedures of a Dentist

A dentist, who can also be called a dental surgeon, is a surgeon who has specialized in the field of dentistry. A dentist qualifies to treat diseases or any other conditions that usually affect the teeth and gums more especially the repairing and extracting of teeth. Dentists can also insert artificial teeth if need be.

The common procedures and works that a dentist performs include the following;

Braces

This is a dental device that dentists insert in the mouth of a patient to correct the way the teeth are aligned. Dentists also use this device to correct bite-related problems such as the underbite or overbite. The braces usually straighten the teeth through the steady pressure they exert on the teeth.

Bonding

This is a type of procedure that dentists perform to repair decayed, fractured, chipped or discolored teeth. It can also be used to reduce the gaps in-between the teeth. In this procedure, a dentist normally mixes composite resin to form a paste and then shades the mixture to make the teeth white or have their usual color. Each tooth is usually applied with a number of layers of this resin. Finally, the material is shaped and polished to make the teeth have a natural and smooth look.

Implants and bridges

These are two procedures that dentists use to replace missing teeth. Bridges are normally false teeth that are put in place by the other normal teeth. Bridges consist of double crowns that are put in the teeth with the false tooth placed in the center. Implants, on the other hand, are roots that are artificial and are used in supporting replacement teeth.

Gum surgery

The gums and jawbones may get infected by the periodontal disease. This disease can lead to individuals losing teeth and gum. Dentists usually perform this procedure so as to help reverse the effects that the periodontal disease may cause. It is important that dentists perform this procedure before the effects become severe.

Extraction

This is a procedure involving a minor surgery of the teeth. Normally, severely damaged need to be extracted to allow the growth of new ones. Also, permanent teeth may need to be removed to enable orthodontic treatment.

Repairs and fillings

This is another dental procedure that dentists perform to repair teeth that may have been compromised by cavities or trauma.

It is always important for people to practice good dental care. This can be done by regular brushing and flossing of the teeth to prevent tooth and gum diseases. In case one is infected with these diseases, it is recommended that he/she visits a dentist as soon as possible.
